I admit, I've never flown Southwest. This isn't the result of a deliberate choice, mind you, it's just that our paths have never crossed. Be that as it may, Southwest is now my favorite airline in the world, simply because it is recognizing National Donut Day, a holiday that celebrates my favorite food.
Ah, the donut. Is there anything more American? (Okay, the hot dog … and baseball … and country music ... but the donut is in there somewhere!) The donut is the de facto people's choice for quick, inexpensive, jelly-filled (or chocolate frosted, or glazed, or coconut-covered) delight, and Southwest is the people's choice for quick and inexpensive air travel, preferably not jelly-filled. It's a perfect fit.
To commemorate the day, Southwest will be handing out 54,000 packages of chocolate donuts at Dallas Love Field, and at the Kansas City, Tulsa, San Antonio, and Houston airports. There's also a yet-to-be-explained donut tour on four flights throughout the day. The airline hasn't posted information on its website yet, but National Donut Day is this Friday, so I imagine they'll be releasing more details soon.
I took the liberty of picking out a few more under-appreciated holidays the airlines could honor in June. Here are a few choice selections:
June 4 (tomorrow!): Hug Your Cat Day. Bring your cat aboard, hug him, and watch as nearby passengers break out into allergic fits.
June 9: Donald Duck Day. Ring in Donald Duck Day by doing your best DD impression on that Miami-Seattle flight. Your seatmate will think it's so funny!
June 18: National Splurge Day. Actually, considering the litany of baggage fees and other charges you've just paid, maybe this isn't the best holiday to celebrate on a plane.
June 22: National Chocolate Eclair Day. National Donut Day's French cousin wants some love, too, so chow down.
June 29: National Waffle Iron Day. Bring it aboard, find an outlet, and voila!
