End of Aloha and ATA Cause Record Hawaiian Searches

We’re data geeks here at BookingBuddy. Pm7235a_spam_asap_page

No. Really.  We rank ourselves in order of Excel wizardry.

So, when I needed to report on popular routes for the year, I saw a strange anomaly: Searches for flights between Los Angeles and Honolulu doubled from March to April. In fact, LAX to HNL was our number-one-searched route for April and beat January, February, and March’s top-ranked route (Detroit to Las Vegas) by 18 percent!

Of course, being an analysis nerd, I thought, “Look at that variance! Something must be wrong with that number!” But then my brain kicked in to gear. I remembered that April saw the end of ATA and Aloha Airlines; both carriers specializing in flights from the West Coast to Hawaii. I guess people were frantically looking for other ways to get to the Big Island and eat their weights in Spam.

Now, if I could just figure out why so many people from the Motor City (DTW) want to visit Sin City (LAS) every month, I’d feel like a real sleuth.

Detroit to Vegas and you can't figure that out? Please tell me you were just trying to be funny.

No? Some sleuth you are...

Conventions, baby, conventions. If I'm not mistaken there are *quite* a few major companies headquartered in and around Detroit. Ford, GM, Chrysler, Little Caesar's Pizza, DTE Energy. Major offices for Deloitte Touche, KPMG, Price Waterhouse, Jeep, EDS... All very large companies or company offices...

...they all have conventions, and Vegas is the stereotypical best place to go for such.

Oh right, forgot about major trade shows that occur in Q1 too - Comdex, CES, the major adult porn show...

Trade shows in your industry are most likely going to be in Vegas too.

Good theory!

I'm curious though how many large corporations like Ford and GM are booking their corporate travel through a site like Booking Buddy as opposed to through direct corporate relationship with a major online travel agency or airline.

Also, you figure Vegas is such a popular conference location that the number of large companies from just Detroit shouldn't outnumber those coming from all around the world, should it?

Anyway, I shudder to think at what the porn industry would look like if it were based out of Detroit. Ewwwww...
