Nestled next to a cypress-covered hill on the peninsula that separates lakes Como and Lecco, Bellagio has long been one of the most popular vacation destinations in Italy. In addition to its charm and views, the village is also known for high prices and a hint of exclusivity, but savvy travelers can still find an affordable lakeside holiday.
Bar Cafe Rossi: One of the best things about Bellagio is its many lakefront cafes, where locals and tourists alike gather for coffee, drinks, and the scenery. Bar Cafe Rossi (Piazza Mazzini 22/24) is the best of the best, with its location on the main square, lake views, and assortment of tasty snacks.
Ristorante Bilacus: The enchanting vine-covered patio and lake views of Ristorante Bilacus (32 Via Serbelloni) would be reason enough to pay it a visit, but the restaurant really owes its reputation to its outstanding fish dishes, famous risotto and ravioli, and decadent lemon cake. While many restaurants in Bellagio gouge tourists for mediocre food, Bilacus offers excellent dishes served in fabulous surroundings for reasonable prices.
Hotel Suisse: A beautiful old villa with stunning views, the Hotel Suisse was once the home of Bice Gobio Melzi, the mistress of 19th-century Italian writer Ippolito Nievo. These days it's a small, charming hotel open from March through November with 10 delightful rooms and one of the best restaurants in the village. Despite perks such as a fab restaurant and breathtaking views, its room rates tend to be far lower than those at the luxury hotels surrounding it.
