The "prettiest city west of the Pecos," according to Will Rogers, Roswell has more going for it than alien conspiracy theories, although a visit to the UFO Museum is not to be missed. Thanks to the tourism dollars pumped into the town following the infamous Roswell Incident, the former stomping grounds of Billy the Kid are now home to dozens of new shops and restaurants that blend Roswell's Wild West past with influences from south of the border.
International UFO Museum: As with all of Roswell's museums, entry to the International UFO Museum is free, but its fantastic kitsch might actually be worth paying for. Despite the seriousness with which it treats its subject matter—the suspected alien landing outside Roswell in 1947—the museum's exhibits do more to disprove the theory than prove it. Just don't tell the die-hard UFO believer next to you. Admission is $5 for adults.
Tia Juana's: For delicious Mexican food with a Southwest influence, head to the adobe palace that is Tia Juana's. After a heaping portion of chipotle lime ribs or hand-made enchiladas and a perfectly mixed margarita, you'll forget which side of the border you're on.
Cozy Cowboy Cottage Rentals: Roswell's hotels are predominantly chains. But for something a bit more unique, rent a furnished cottage or house from Cozy Cowboy Cottage Rentals. Everything from a studio to a three-bedroom home is available, and each is decorated in Cozy Cowboy, Classic Retro, or Roswell Alien style, and includes a full kitchen with everything you need to cook meals. Many of the homes also include fenced-in yards to accommodate those traveling with pets or small children. Although a monthly stays are preferred, call to see if there are vacancies you can fill for a shorter period of time.
