Go Bavarian in Leavenworth, Washington

Posted September 24, 2009 by Kate Hamman

Leavenworth, a Bavarian village in Washington's Cascade Mountains, welcomes visitors to explore German culture without the pricey plane ride abroad. And fall is a glorious time to visit, as the leaves change and the popular Oktoberfest gets in full swing. If the festival isn't your cup of beer, you can also discover the origins of nutcrackers, make your own gingerbread house, and relax in an alpine haven.

Abendblume Pension: Modeled after an Austrian Chalet, the Abendblume Pension delivers European elegance in the Cascade Mountains. Each of the seven rooms is designed for ultimate privacy and comfort, with individual balconies, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and free Internet access. Guests may never set foot outside their rooms, except perhaps in the morning for the Aebleskivers (Danish pancakes) served with homemade apple syrup. Rooms start at $145 per night, and include breakfast.

Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum: There's no better place to go nuts than at the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. More than 5,000 nutcrackers from 40 countries are on display, some dating as far back as the 16th century. Visitors learn the importance of these decorative devices and explore the different materials, such as wood, ivory, and metal, used to create the contraptions. Admission costs $2.50. Be sure to say hello to the Nutcracker Lady, Arlene Wagner, resident expert on all things nuts.

The Gingerbread Factory: The Gingerbread Factory makes it easy to catch the gingerbread man, especially in the fall when the bakery creates thousands of new goodies, including cookies, cakes, and strudels. Though the scent of ginger and sugar tempts visitors from afar, many also come for the selection of Panini sandwiches, salads, and specialty items, such as the delicious turkey triangles. Guests can also browse the gingerbread gift store for novelty items, as well as make-your-own gingerbread house kits.
