Live it Up Student-Style in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Posted October 15, 2009 by Jamie Moore

Mi-umichigan-def Revel in University of Michigan life at prices any undergrad would love. This football-crazy college town has all the elements of wild weekend fun, even if you're not coming to cheer on the Wolverines: a quintessential burger joint, the requisite student watering hole, and a nightclub with a knack for booking big bands before they're big.

Eat
Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger: Blimpy addicts pack gigantic appetites when they head to this diner, the oldest hamburger stand in Ann Arbor. The "starter-size" burgers ($2.35) have two patties. Go big or go home? Try the "quint" (four patties for $5.10), an excellent remedy for hangovers. According to one Blimpy fan, there are more than 2,147,483,648 side item combinations to top things off, including six cheeses, fried eggs, and banana peppers. You supply the Rolaids.

Drink
Arbor Brewing Company Pub: Arbor Brewing Company (known as the ABC) mixes things up perfectly with house-brewed beer, games, television, and events like monthly beer tastings and new beer release parties. Try the award-winning Faricy Fest Irish Stout with hints of chocolate and espresso or a refreshing Brasserie Blonde Belgian beer flavored with orange and lemongrass. Seasonal brews include the Oktoberfest, a red Munich-style lager with spicy hops. Happy hour pints are $3 (regularly $5) and many of the munchies are local, organic, or made from scratch.

Play
Blind Pig: This venue's alumni list reads like a who's who of edgy, eclectic rock: Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Joan Baez, and REM. Even Nirvana famously endorsed the hip nightclub as its "number one venue of choice." Today, the club rocks out to indie music, taking scheduling cues from college student crowds. Get yourself one of the nicely-priced tickets ($3 to $15) and rock out with a few bands and singers you may have heart of, plus plenty of yet-to-be-discovered bands whose music is best described as "experimental."

In an educational institution like The University of Michigan, you're apt not only to see what the school has to offer as far as Majors and student life, but you do want to venture out into their extra-curricular activities. Although this is just a sampling of what you may perceive is "living it up," the real experience is actually going there and seeing the atmosphere for yourself. If you're a student, go with your class and teacher: Preferably someone who has gone there or has knowledge of the area.
