With just a few months until the 2010 Olympics, Vancouver invites you to experience the city in true Olympic style. Spend your day schussing down a mountain along the same runs the pros will race. And then revive with fine wine at a hip bar, before returning to your ultra-luxe accommodations where the official clock ticks down to the start of the games.
Cypress Mountain: Only 30 minutes from Vancouver, Cypress Mountain is hosting the skiing and snowboarding events for the 2010 Olympics. And now you can ride the same runs the Olympians will use. The more adventurous can try their hand at Trumpeter (black diamond), which will serve as the giant slalom for snowboarders. No matter what, the view of Vancouver and the Pacific Ocean from the top of the Eagle Express chairlift is more than enough to take your breath away. Full-day lift tickets start at $44.76 CAD (about $42.50 U.S.; check with XE.com for current exchange rates) per person.
Salt Tasting Room: Walk down a back alley in Vancouver's historic Gastown, and you may just stumble upon the Salt Tasting Room, where the wine pours freely and the atmosphere is chic. The wine selection wows, with many unknown and local vintners, and it changes almost weekly. If you time it right, you may also get the chance to sample a glass of Vincor, the official wine of 2010 Olympics. A sherry flight of three two-ounce tasters costs $15 CAD, and you can add a tasting plate of three choices of meats or cheeses from the chalkboard and three condiments for an additional $15 CAD.
Wedgewood Hotel: The Wedgewood Hotel may seem a little pricey, but it's worth every penny. For one thing, you'll get to stay about two blocks down the street from the Vancouver 2010 countdown clock in the heart of the city. Also, with several awards to its name, this luxurious boutique hotel treats every guest like royalty. Each room features private balconies, bathrobes, slippers, a box of Belgian chocolates, and turndown service with homemade cookies. Rooms start at $199 CAD per night.
