If you think summer's fruit harvest is as sweet as it gets, try Quebec's lip-smacking winter yield. Bundle up and see how frozen apples reduce to ice cider and maple sap becomes toffee wine—all for free—near the renowned Mont Tremblant ski resort. Explore more wintry wonders in the forest and lake surrounding your secluded bed and breakfast.
Les Vergers Lafrance: During January, this popular cider house invites everyone to celebrate the ice apple harvest with apple-picking family fun. Walk through the orchard and munch on a just-picked frozen apple, enjoy cross-country ski runs and snowshoe trails, or play on a skating rink and sledding hill. In the tasting room you can enjoy the fruits of your apple-picking labor for free, sipping award-winning ice cider or one of 15 other cider varieties. For the kids, there's homemade sparkling apple juice. A votre sante!
L'Ambroisie: It's true; Quebec's maple trees are responsible for about 75 percent of the world's maple syrup. But the natural bounty of the unassuming maple has inspired a wine expert to create another sweet treat: maple wine. Tour the European-style wine cellar, then head for the lakeside tasting room for a sip of the licorice, toffee, and vanilla Rupin wine or the sweet notes of the sparkling Champagne-like Caldeira. Tastings are free, but reservations are required in winter.
Domaine des Merveilles (most of this website is in French only): Indulge in winter's simple outdoor pleasures at this elegant bed and breakfast. Snowshoe or ski through the peaceful wood, skate around the private lake, or soak your cares away in the deck-side hot tub. Inside you'll find cozy log cabin-style rooms with heated floors and sumptuous French bedspreads. Save time for the huge European-style breakfast and a dip in the indoor pool.
