Boise Bustles with a Makeover While Keeping Prices Low

Posted January 5, 2010 by Amy Westervelt

ID-Boise-Hills-DEF The city of Boise has recently invested a large sum of money in beautifying its riverfront and Old Downtown, making it both pedestrian-friendly and attractive. The city may have spent a lot to show off its charms, but you can experience them for relatively little. Enjoy glimpses of the Boise River and the nearby Rockies while taking advantage of the new shops and restaurants that have downtown Boise bustling.

8th Street Marketplace: Take a stroll downtown to the 8th Street Marketplace to check out dozens of hip new shops and cafes. 8th Street is a pedestrian zone and on Saturdays, the area plays host to a large outdoor market that is equal parts farmers' market and local artisan fair.

Cottonwood Grille: One of Boise's most popular restaurants, the Cottonwood Grille serves a huge assortment of solid American dishes, many of which take advantage of locally available seafood (the Idaho trout is fantastic), meats, and produce. A large stone fireplace, exposed wooden beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows lend the place a cozy mountain vibe. Entrees cost between $12 and $30.

Hotel 43: Located right downtown within walking distance of all of the new shops and restaurants that have revitalized Boise, Hotel 43 underwent a similar makeover recently, decking out its large rooms with luxe linens and flat-screen TVs. Fortunately, the swanky upgrade didn't come with an increase in the rates, which still start at $99 per night.

I grew up in Boise and go back yearly to visit family. Great suggestions! The Cottonwood Grille is right on the river (beautiful year-round, especially in summer). My husband and I stayed in Hotel 43 on our wedding night. It was very nice-- trendy, spacious and comfortable. I'd highly recommend it.
