Limin' in Downtown Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Posted January 13, 2010 by Jamie Moore

Stthomas-charlotte-def So serious are Virgin Islanders about hanging out and relaxing that they've actually coined a term for it: limin'. Feel the laid-back tropical vibe in downtown Charlotte Amalie when you start with a signature St. Thomas cocktail, get lost in a shipwreck store, and take your time savoring down-home Caribbean cooking. Every stop is flip-flop friendly and easygoing on your wallet.

Drink
Paradise Point: You'll see lots of limin' at Paradise Point, home of the cool and creamy Bailey's Bushwhacker. The St. Thomas cocktail is the main attraction here, although some would argue it gets upstaged by the trick-performing cockatoos, live music, and views from the outdoor deck. At 700 feet above downtown, you can see tiny forested islands, topaz bays, and even Puerto Rico. Half the fun is getting here on a gondola.

Shop
S.O.S. Antiques: Somehow when you're in pirate territory the idea of sunken treasure becomes even more alluring. One step into this store and you feel like you're walking inside a shipwreck or a cluttered maritime museum. There are nautical antiques and salvage reproductions in every nook and cranny. Pick up a sword, dagger, or cannon ball and imagine the stories behind each one. The perfect souvenir: A nautical map for him, or a locally found treasure coin mounted in gold and strung on a necklace for her.

Eat
Cuzzin's Caribbean Restaurant & Bar: After a morning of downtown shopping, stop in at this cozy brick-walled place for authentic Caribbean home cooking. Like nearly everywhere else in town, good-humored staff and cheery decor set the no worries, mon tone. Try something you've never had: island-style curried mutton with spicy red beans and rice or fried plantains. For dinner the signature dish is served, Cuzzin Nemo with a blend of conch, lobster, and more seafood atop pasta.

With those who know, St Thomas is called "the armpit of the Islands." get out as soon as possible. The rest of the Virgins is terrific

how can you run a promo on a country where their government don't allows 60 years or older ladies to walk to church with a flower in their hands in silence ? just think about it from the human side ? how would you feel if they were your mom aunt or grandmother?

I got a really fantastic deal on Carnival's Liberty 7 days 364.00 interior to the V.I. Dec. 11 2010 We weren't planning on cruising this year and had made other plans but when I saw this price I just couldn't refuse. Any chance I can get to go back to St. Thomas is a real treat for me. I just love it over there.
