When love is in the air, Vienna puts on its finest gown and dances a waltz in celebration. Though the city can be romantic any time of year, it really shines during its Ball Season. However, if you can't afford to two-step with the ball-goers, there are plenty of other ways to sweep your sweetheart off his or her feet. You can take a spin on the ice in front of City Hall, sample candied flowers mixed with rich chocolates at a local sweets shop, and return to your cozy room at an ideally located hotel.
Vienna Ice Dream 2010: Lace up your skates and hit the rink in front of Vienna's City Hall, where you and a loved one can skate under the moonlight and twinkling lights. Every January through March, the city transforms this area into a skating wonderland, complete with a 1,300-foot long "dreampath" which connects two rinks. You can also stop at any of the food vendors along the way for warm drinks and refreshments.
Blühendes Konfekt (in German only): Traditionally, chocolate or flowers were an ideal way to say "I love you." But Blühendes Konfekt takes it a step further by combining the two into a delectably sweet gift. Roses, cherry blossoms, and marigolds are lovingly preserved in sugar before adorning a range of chocolate treats. The bon-bon creations vary by season and come in boxes of three, six, or 12.
Hotel Austria-Wien: Just steps from St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hotel Austria-Wien offers an affordable place to stay right in the heart of the city. Snuggle up with your sweetie in one of the hotel's 46 rooms before stepping out for a day on the town. In the morning, you can enjoy a full breakfast buffet. Rooms start at €109 per night for two people, and include breakfast.
